If you’re looking for somewhere peaceful and secluded, there’s over 80km of coast to explore, from the sheltered bays around Chichester to the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head and the golden sands of Camber. Sussex has miles of spectacular and award wining coastine.
Children and parents will love the family-friendly beaches of Worthing, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Eastbourne, perfect for pottering in the shallows, relaxing in a deckchair and strolling along the prom and piers. At Hastings explore the fishing harbour and further along the coast there’s the seaside chic of Brighton beach with its cafes and bars and the bright lights of the pier to tempt you when night falls. West Wittering is surfer heaven and has wide sands at low tide and the beautiful dunes at East Head. For the latest surf report at the Witterings visit the magic seaweed website.
The beautiful 700-acre Seven Sisters Country Park near Seaford includes three and a half of the famous Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, an unspoilt coastline and the tranquil lower Cuckmere Valley, with the distinctive ‘meanders’ (curves) of the River Cuckmere. There’s an award-winning trail down to the remote shingle beach at Cuckmere Haven, popular with smugglers in the 18th century, and on a summer’s evening you can expect to see terns, ringed plovers, cormorants and kittiwakes. All along the coast there are secluded, secret bays to discover, some only accessible on foot or by boat.
A boat trip is a great way to enjoy the scenery – during the summer there are boat trips from Eastbourne to Beachy Head and the lighthouse, leisurely cruises around Chichester harbour and trips in the Skylark from Littlehampton quay up the River Arun to Arundel and Amberley, and many more.
Many beaches in Sussex have been awared the prestigious Blue Flag, which is an international award scheme which acts as a guarantee to tourists that a beach or marina they are visiting is one of the best in the world. Search for Sussex's Blug Flag beaches at www.blueflag.org.uk
