Theatres and concert halls host varied programmes of drama, opera and music for all tastes including pre-West End premieres, top stage actors and performers from all over the world.

Live music is thriving in pubs and clubs – almost any night of the week you can hear jazz, blues, rock and punk, or join in at open mic nights. And for dedicated clubbers, there are great nights at clubs throughout the county, but especially in Brighton, where the enthusiastic and innovative club scene is known for its open-minded, relaxed attitude and a fondness for dressing up, whether it’s rockabilly, burlesque or Carry On Nurse!

As well as great nightlife, there’s plenty to do during the day. Experience a day at the races at one of the county’s historic and scenic racecourses. Even if you don’t know a trifecta from a placepot, you can get close to the horses in the ring and enjoy a flutter.

For classic motor racing, head for Goodwood for the Festival of Speed in June, a glamorous weekend of fast cars and track legends, and the Revival Meeting in September, celebrating the golden age of British motor sport in full 40s and 50s period detail.
